The last 18-20 months have been the most
challenging period faced by the Travel & Tourism
industry in modern history. Terrorist atrocities, the
prolonged downturn in the global economy, and the looming
prospect of war continue to dampen Travel & Tourism
demand, setting the scene for a more uncertain world
in the future. At the same time, these events have acted
as a catalyst for more fundamental changes in market
behaviour and travel patterns that have been slowly
emerging since the 1990s.
Travel & Tourism now needs a new vision
and a new strategy, which will involve a new partnership
between all stakeholders, to rebuild confidence, strengthen
industry efforts, and help turn the challenges into
opportunities. The Global Summit for Travel & Tourism
will provide the platform at which to discuss, plan
and initiate New Tourism.

The term "astronaut"
derives from the Greek words meaning "space
sailor," and refers to all who have been launched
as crew members aboard NASA spacecraft bound for
orbit and beyond. It is therefore appropriate with
our theme of New Tourism to invite the world's most
famous "Space Sailor" to share his personal
views on the feasibility of Space Tourism and to
give us an insight into the small step he made on
July 20th 1969, that has, as he predicted, been
a giant leap for mankind. |

The Big Picture
Major technological, political and economic events
that precipitated the growth of Travel & Tourism
were unforeseen half a century ago or,
in some cases, as little as 20 years ago. Are
we any better placed now to predict the future?
If so, what is the next big thing on the horizon
for Travel & Tourism? And what impact is this
likely to have on market demand and customer expectations?

The
CEOs' Response
How has the industry adapted in the past to
major events and developments affecting Travel
& Tourism? And what will its response
be in the future? Meanwhile, how can the industry
develop a longer-term vision so as to improve
strategic planning and ensure it adopts a
proactive approach to major influences and
developments, rather than simply reacting
to them after the event? |

- 23:00 Reception & Gala
Dinner at the San Francisco Convent, Faro |
| The Gala Dinner will be hosted in
an historic old convent, built in the 16th century
and totally refurbished after the earthquake of
1755 that devastated the coast of Lisbon and the
Algarve. After the extinction of the religious order,
it was home to the infantry and used for military
purposes. Situated close to the old town wall, in
the heart of the city of Faro and facing the sea,
the old Convent is now an important school and training
facility for hospitality and tourism. |
