Vice-Chairman, Sol Meliá


After graduating in Business Studies and Economics from ICADE, Pontificia de Comillas University (Madrid, Spain), Sebastián Escarrer held several positions in multinational companies such as the Coca-Cola Corporation, the First Boston Corporation, IBM Corporation, Hyatt International and the Mac-Gemini Group. In 1993 he obtained an MBA from the Wharton School, Pennsylvania University, specializing in Business Strategy, Finance and Multinational Management.

In 1993 Sebastián Escarrer joined Sol Meliá as the assistant to the Vice Chairman and in 1994 he became Chief Executive Officer. In June 1999, after the merger with Inmotel Inversiones and the IPO of Meliá Inversiones Americanas (MIA), he became Vice Chairman of Sol Meliá.

1997, Sebastián Escarrer was nominated by the World Economic Forum as one of the 100 leading businessmen for the 21st century, together with Alexandro Benetton (Benetton), Jerry Yanes (Yahoo) or Wynton Marsalis (Lincoln Center), amongst others. Travel Agent magazine chose him as their "Personality of the Year in Latin America" in 1997 and "Personality of the Year in Europe" in 1998.

Sebastián Escarrer was also chosen as one of the 30 European business leaders advising the European Commissioner for Trade at the world summit on free trade, and has been designated by the Swiss Investment Fund "Pictet" as an advisor for leisure tourism. He is also a member of the Spanish Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce.

In 2002, Sebastián Escarrer was named "Best Entrepreneur in the Balearic Islands" by the magazine Actualidad Económica.

Mr. Escarrer also combines his executive responsibilities within three major Boards: Member of the Executive Committee of the World Travel & Tourism Council; Member of the prestigious Swiss Investment Fund Pictet; Member of Exceltur, He is also Member of the Executive Committee of the Fundación Empresa y Sociedad. Mr. Escarrer is also Founder Member of the Fundación Empresa y Crecimiento.

He is also a member of the Spanish Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce. More recently, Mr. Escarrer has also become a member of the International Advisory Board of the German entity Eurohypo.
